We had the opportunity to host our first annual Beautiful Nightmare Dance Party last week in the incredible venue, The Bar Complex, in Lexington, KY, which boasts a mirror-paneled and pillared ballroom and a mesmerizing light display that was installed by the same company that put in the light displays for the infamous Studio 54. After misjudging the best way to enter the vendor area the day before, I corrected my approach, skirted the convention center, and came in the opposite entrance, allowing me to make my way through the even more crowded vendor area with a minimum of “pardon me”/”excuse me” dances in the process. Arriving in Paizos’ Pathfinder pavilion was really cool, because it shows how just much a creative indie manufacturer could become a major power player with its Roleplaying system in just 7 years. It may have been based on D&D’s 3.5 open license mechanics when it was released in 2008…

The Temple is an original Fantasy story set in medieval times. As the story unfolds, A forbidden love between a knight and a princess cause him and other knights to accept a life threatening challenge to be with the one he loves(Princess Maria). He faces violent betrayal, supernatural forces of the dead and hell that condemns him to immortal life long servitude to an evil Monk(Netivia). There is only a certain amount of time before he can no longer be saved from the condemning curse of being a gargoyle slave of the Temple.

Chatting with Ben Loomes was refreshing, as his desire for improving the storytelling landscape around him was one I could totally understand. As a roleplayer himself, he found real world campaigns lacked the auditory elements found in video games and set about to change that. Using a complex sample based program (so that every type of sound can have random components) with reverb options (so you can have sounds happening in different qualitative environments, from open plains to confined caverns), he created a series of sound effects and music scores that can be triggered by your smartphone

Gen Con has the distinction of being the largest table top gaming Convention in North America, with a focus on board games, pen-and-paper, card games, and anything related to games that are not primarily played in the digital realm. (This doesn’t mean that there aren’t some cool tabletop games that take advantage of technology in their gameplay, but the technology isn’t required for the playing of most of the games.)
