After 20 years in the local Goth scene here in San Diego, I began to notice some of my friends exploring a new (to me) subculture called “Steampunk.” My own firsthand experience was attending San Diego’s first Steampunk convention last year: The Gaslight Gathering Steampunk and Victoriana Convention. Although Steampunk tends to browns, brass and bowlers – black is always in fashion and people had clearly adapted some of the Gothic attire to this alternate subculture.
