Sometimes, when we think about being outsiders, we can start to see certain divisions as more important than others. First, it’s who’s Goth and who’s not; then it’s what type of Goth are you, Victorian, Steampunk, Cybergoth, etc. However, if we widen our gaze a little bit, we could easily see that there are tons of other freaks and outcasts all around us. And usually the ones with the name badges who give us all the conveniences of modern life get it the worst!

There are times when you are attacked and you don’t have access to a gun nor are you able to run. You can use open-handed self-defense, but, if you’re like most people, you would prefer using an actual object, because you want to be able to defend yourself as best you can. You don’t have a designated weapon (knife, machete, bow/crossbow, gun) available, so you have to improvise. This article will cover normal, everyday, things that can be used for self-defense.

GATHERING STEAM
After 20 years in the local Goth scene here in San Diego, I began to notice some of my friends exploring a new (to me) subculture called “Steampunk.†My own firsthand experience was attending San Diego’s first Steampunk convention last year: The Gaslight Gathering Steampunk and Victoriana Convention. Although Steampunk tends to browns, brass and bowlers – black is always in fashion and people had clearly adapted some of the Gothic attire to this alternate subculture.

This world is dangerous with everything from terrorism and hate crimes to violent flash mobs, domestic abuse, rapes, muggings , break-ins and countless other forms of violence. There are several forms of prevention, avoidance, and self-defense against such violence. In this article, I want to explore the one thing that we all can use even if we are unarmed with a weapon or knowledge of open-handed self-defense: awareness.
