Originally founded in 1991 by Ralph Zalejski, Senistro went through some changes, including lineup and singing, and was founded new in 2020. In 2021 the EP Anymore was released, and in 2022 they released Soulripper with their new vocalist Celine Klause.
Theme
With sombre vocals and a choir the title track opens the EP, preparing you for that classic Gothic rock sound that flows through each song that’s both heavy but easy-listening, laden with keys mixed very well with the guitars.
Presentation
When the song “Soulripper” started I very much enjoyed the sound of the choir mixed with the music. Anytime there’s a choir in dark metal that usually means I’m going to enjoy it! The keys by Nick Phol mixed with the guitars by Zalejski throughout was the most enjoyable part of the EP for me. And hearing “Frozen Child” in German was a pleasant surprise.
While I did enjoy Celine’s vocals, they seem very unchanging in each song. Singing in almost the same key and style to the point where I didn’t know if a new song had started. I hear a lot of potential, but very little range.
Audience Fit
Fans of Gothic rock, especially female-fronted Gothic rock, would appreciate this release.
Closing Thoughts
Though lacking in some ways, Soulripper was enjoyable in others and I do hear potential for growth and would like to see what they have next in store.
